13 Bold Gaming Predictions For 2019

1. Ubisoft Attempts To Revive Rhythm Games (And Fails)

Guitar Hero Live
Activision

At the beginning of 2017, Ubisoft acquired FreeStyleGames - the studio behind both the DJ Hero series and the now-dead Guitar Hero Live - and re-branded them Ubisoft Leamington.

This has prompted suspicion from rhythm game enthusiasts that the publisher may be hoping to rekindle the embers of the once-popular genre, most likely by releasing a new Guitar Hero-esque IP.

With the Guitar Hero brand pretty much a poisoned, drained well at this point, starting anew without the same baggage is probably a sensible idea.

Plus, with Ubisoft Leamington having yet to announce their own title since 2015's Guitar Hero Live - instead providing polishing on entries into the Call of Duty and The Division franchises - they've certainly had enough time to work on a new rhythm game.

Sadly, though, the rhythm bubble seems to have burst, so unless Ubisoft pulls off a radical reinvention of the genre, this seems destined to be a modest, niche success at best if not a simple failure.

On behalf of all the Guitar Hero fans out there, though, fingers, toes and everything else are firmly crossed that it succeeds. Assuming it's even what Ubi Leamington is working on, of course.
