13 More Horror Themed Video Games To Play On Halloween
10. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

No game has ever been so innovative in the horror genre than Eternal Darkness for the Nintendo GameCube. Not only can you learn a variety of spells through the use of magickal runes but your characters come equipped with their own sanity meters. As your sanity runs low you'll begin to experience a variety of hallucinations that were so good Nintendo had to patent the idea.
The plot of Eternal Darkness is one of evil ancients with incredible power. You'll take control of Alex Roivas who wakes up to find herself caught up in a deadly game. After finding an ancient tome bound in human flesh you'll travel through time playing as various characters with different skills. Each character completes a portion of the story allowing Alex to learn more about her destiny while pushing her further into the darkness.
The game features a super creepy atmosphere whether you're exploring the old, abandoned mansion, catacombs ridden with corpses, or a haunted cathedral on a dark, stormy night. You'll experience your share of chills and thrills while voices echo in the corridors. Be careful as you battle skeletal monstrosities as your sanity may run low which will not only cause the walls to bleed but you may see ghosts, have insects swarm your screen, or even receive an error message that your controller is malfunctioning.
Not only does Eternal Darkness have one of the best horror stories in gaming but the story is flexible making replay value strong. The sanity effects are reason enough to give the game a try. Throw in the combat system and the use of spell building and casting and you have one game that deserved far more attention than it received in its time.
Currently, the creators of the original games - Silicon Knights - are working on a sequel. This is a bit scary unto itself as Eternal Darkness is already so perfect as is. If you've not played the game yet you must find yourself a copy and prepare for an experience unlike any other as the game plays with your mind to deliver the scares.
