13 More Horror Themed Video Games To Play On Halloween
8. Fatal Frame

What is it that makes a game scary? The music and scenery play a huge part and Fatal Frame delivers on both ends. However, many would argue that it's the monsters you have to eventually face off against that bring the real scares. Fatal Frame takes this idea and squeezes every last drop of fear from it. In order to vanquish the ghosts that haunt the grounds you have to get as physically close to them as possible. Allowing a gruesome ghost to come within inches of your personal space is as creepy as gets.
Let's add in the fact that these aren't your typical ghosts but very angry - and suffering - spirits that don't take lightly to your intruding on their ground. As scarily ambient these games are it's the stories behind the hauntings that will really freak you out. Each revolves around dark rituals that include sacrifice as the key ingredient. Whether it be a game of hide-and-seek with children sought by a woman blinded by a spiked mask or a ritual in which one twin must strangle another you'll be sure to find these villages unsettling.
Fatal Frame has often been called the scariest game of all time and it's certainly no exaggeration. All three entries in the series have amazing graphics, brilliant but twisted stories, and a combination of eerie atmosphere and gameplay mechanics that will have you hiding under your blanket. Start with the first game on Playstation 2 and follow chronologically from there. A fourth game titled Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was also released but has no plans to be brought to the United States.
