13 Tips, Tricks And Secrets To Boost Your PC Gaming Performance

6. Cool Down Your PC

So you've followed the steps in the previous tip, and discovered that your PC is at boiling point. There you were, thinking that the reason you were getting all hot and sweaty during gaming sessions was because you were so absorbed in the on-screen experience, but in reality your PC has been doubling as an electric radiator. If your GPU is overheating, it might forcibly start running at lower clock speeds, affecting performance. It can also cause games to crash and ultimately shorten the lifespan of components. There are countless things you can do to cool down your PC, such as buying a heatsink, liquid cooling system, or a new, airy PC case. But if you don't want to pay big money and dismantle your PC, then you do have other options: Open up your PC, and blow on its internals using a can of compressed air. Focus particularly on the graphics card and CPU fans, because these are the parts that most need good airflow. Make sure you have internal case fans where possible, that they're working, and that they're blowing in the right direction. While there are different theories about airflow in PC cases, the general rule is fans on the front and side of the case should blow air into the ase, while fans on the top and rear should be exhaust fans pushing the air out. Once you've made sure your fans are set up correctly, use a free program like Speedfan if you want more manual control over them, and see if turning them up or down affects temperatures.
