14 'Genius' Video Game Features That Were Total Accidents
2. Grand Theft Auto's Wanted Level
What you think: Rockstar North - back then, DMA Design - were a hearty bunch of envelope-pushing ragamuffins, opting to put together a crime-focussed game that revelled in cop-killing and violent destruction.
What actually happened: The name 'Grand Theft Auto' wasn't even on the table back before 1997, as instead the team were putting together a delightful little cops n' robbers-style racing game called 'Race n' Chase'. It was touted to have a focus on multiplayer, and feels like it would've borrowed heavily from other super-popular top-down racer Micro Machines.
However, one bug in an early build of the game saw the cop cars' A.I. start to ram the players, leading to a lightbulb moment from the team as they realised "Hey... evading the cops is pretty fun", and GTA was born. Thankfully they changed that name to suit as well - can you honestly imagine a world where gaming's biggest and most notorious franchise was called 'Race n' Chase'?
