It seems like a lot of the monologues from this trilogy start with "The Past...", but nevertheless, it doesn't disparage them. This line comes after the prologue of, once again, the second game
One paragraph for one hell of a metaphor that describes 'fixing your life'. Max, being the pessimist, seeing nothing ever coming of fixing his past, it only serving to cause him more anguish.
Though it's hard to argue, it does come from experience. And yet, there's a glimmer of hope with the last sentence, but the "could" is discouraging.
