In reference to a particular scene in the second instalment where Max is held up at gunpoint, as well as being a cheeky little reference to the mechanics of the game if you want to see it that way.

The idea that time can go so slow that you can live a lifetime in a split-second; would that be a luxury or a curse? Seemingly, Max sees his life flash by all the time, given how many gunfights he gets into.

He fights to survive, and yet he's given a constant reminder of all the "heartbreak and scars" that haunt him. Makes you wonder why he even bothers.
