6. Axiom Verge

If You Already Like: Super Metroid, Mega Man, Contra.

As I mentioned back with Headlander, it feels like many developers have rediscovered their love for Metroid/Castlevania games recently, and if you're yet to get stuck into the genre whatsoever, Axiom Verge is a straight-outta-the-90s throwback with some subtly brilliant modernisations.

Basic gameplay is side-scroller shooting, but you'll constantly picking up new abilities and weapon mods, going from a standard blaster to screen-clearing lasers - and from basic jumping to time-bending teleports.

Part of the fun is wandering off the beaten path just to see what you can find (the game has around 20 different weapons and 15 upgrades), but it's precisely because one-man developer powerhouse Thomas Happ nailed the feel of gameplay so well, that it all comes together perfectly.
