14 Most Surprising Metacritic Scores Of 2017
4. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (86)
Prior to the release of Resident Evil 7, Capcom's survival horror franchise had been on the back foot following the critically and commercially disappointing reception to the sixth game, which scored just 67 upon initial release.
While just about everyone was expecting RE7 to be an improvement, it wouldn't have been remotely surprising if the game's new first-person style was met with some pushback, as well as the potential for it to be too short, fail to fully exploit its PSVR support, or just not feel like a Resident Evil game.
As it turned out, RE7 was by far the best Resident Evil game since the fourth, with critics praising it for its macabre story, unexpected dark humour, entertaining villains and fantastic VR support.
Seriously, if you haven't played this game in VR yet, get yourself some adult diapers and give it a go. It is a terrifying experience like nothing else available for PSVR right now.
Even played "flat", though, RE7 is a highly entertaining rejuvenation of the stagnant series, creating a firm formula for the inevitable eighth game in a year or two.
