Sometimes you need a break from the first-person slow-crawling horror that dominates the market, and The Evil Within 2 is the perfect throwback solution.

Literally feeling - in the best way possible - like it came from the mid-2000s when everybody was ripping off Resident Evil 4, this at least has Shinji Mikami at the helm once again i.e. the guy who conceptualised RE4's over-shoulder camera in the first place.

Brilliantly, The Evil Within 2 isn't resting on its laurels, busting out the awesome idea of an open-world horror done with this control scheme. Tango Gameworks hide many set-piece encounters behind random doors and alleyways, meaning even going from A to B can result in jump-scares and frenetic encounters with the undead. Think Minecraft at night, add shooting and you're almost there.

In terms of story, protagonist Sebastien Castellanos is drawn back into a Matrix-esque constructed reality that also houses his daughter at the centre, meaning the devs could conjure up all sorts of ridiculous monsters and aberrations manifested from the thoughts of every connected human.

A massive walking mass of bones and pulped flesh with a camera lens for a head? You ain't seen nothing yet...
