15 Best Months To Be A Gamer (Since 2000)
12. November 2003 Knights, Superstars And Sands...
Bioware has long been an important developer on the PC, creating classic RPGs like Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate prior to taking on the big task of adapting the Star Wars series into an RPG. It was a massive success for the Star Wars expanded universe, creating memorable original characters that still appear on 'Best Of' lists today. With great combat, story and design, Knights Of The Old Republic deserves to be recognised as one of gaming's greats.
Another pair of legends embarked on their own RPG story in November 2003 too; Mario and Luigi don't really strike you as heroic RPG characters but Superstar Saga for the GBA was a phenomenal RPG led by the Mario Bros. It had a genuinely funny script with great gameplay and battle mechanics too (both brothers were controllable at the same time), making it another successful venture into the RPG genre for Nintendo (following Super Mario RPG).
Elsewhere, Prince of Persia made a return to the spotlight with the excellent Sands Of Time; combining exciting combat, great platform elements and tricky puzzles to good effect. Mario Kart arrived on the Gamecube with Double Dash!! and Going Commando, the sequel to Ratchet and Clank, proved to be a major success too.
Metacritic Roundup: Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, 93. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, 90. Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, 92. Average: 91.67.
