Much like Mario, a list of this type would be nothing without Sonic the Hedgehog, and even for those who struggled to make it through the challenging Mega Drive platformer, who could forget the eye-popping Green Hill Zone that kicked the game off? The gold rings, the red crabs, the diving fish, the spring-boards, the TV-esque item boxes, and the giant ring to jump through at the end: what's not to love? Much like the opening to Mario, it's not at all difficult, but it's a stupid amount of fun, and the super-fast movement just makes it all that much more enjoyable. The end of the third act of Green Hill Zone sees Sonic face the first boss: Dr. Robotnik, who attacks Sonic with a giant swinging ball attached to his portable ship. After a few hits, however, Robotnik's ship is destroyed and the Green Hill Zone is done.
