6. Nolan North - Nathan Drake (Uncharted 4: A Thief's End)
Quips galore, an itchy trigger finger, and an incredible grip was all Nathan Drake needed to make Uncharted work. Keeping things light and breezy was a part of Nate’s personality, and while this was and always will be the case, when the fourth instalment came around Nate had matured, and Nolan North upped his game.
Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Nate is living the ordinary life he promised Elena, but the spirit of adventure is calling him once more. In this instalment, this isn’t quite the same Nate we’ve known and loved for the past three entries. This is a Nate that is trying to suppress who is he as an adventurer, while ultimately having to realise that risking life and limb for the next big treasure isn’t the most important thing when you have a family to leave behind.
The subtle changes that North made to Nate’s character perfectly presented the struggle that the treasure hunter was going through, as he lay on the cusp of change, unsure if he truly wanted to make that change. It added a whole other level of maturity and nuance to the popular franchise, elevating it above its already high standard. Although we might not be done entirely with the Drake saga, if this was the last then it would have ended with Nate at his most relatable, likeable and with a finale he truly deserved.
