12. Avenger Defense - XCOM 2

One of the most overlooked gems of the year, XCOM 2 is a real-time strategy fans wet dream. Remixing and designing tactics around your own customisable squad of soldiers is already a very engaging experience, but there comes a point in the story where you're thrown into a life-or-death showdown against overwhelming odds.

Suddenly you're afforded more soldiers on the field than ever before as your base HQ is being bore down on by hordes of alien forces.

You'll adapt on the fly to their various attacks, place units in advantageous positions only for them to get flanked by encroaching foes - it's relentless, and a perfect execution on why - when it's firing on all cylinders - there's nothing anywhere near as intense in gaming as a good ol' game of XCOM.
