3. Daydreaming - What Remains Of Edith Finch

Truly one of the most innovative sequences in a game otherwise painted as "yet another walking simulator", What Remains of Edith Finch tells a variety of stories surrounding the Finch family, ending in how they eventually died.

One such tale is that of Lewis Finch; a cannery worker who was so fed up and/or bored of his daily life comprising the cutting of fish heads, he begins to daydream. Brilliantly, the game handles this visually by having Lewis' visions of a fantasy kingdom start to take over the screen, but you also start losing parts of the controller to his more whimsical side, too.

Soon you'll be trying to pilot 'King Lewis' through courtyards of adoring fans and down rivers, visiting different parts of what turns into an entire world he wants to live in with each passing day. You really feel the wasted potential and ultimate sadness of such a truly creative and lonely individual, reaching out to construct a world in his mind that feels more rewarding and worthwhile than the one around him.

Though every Finch family member's story ends with them perishing, this 'cannery scene' is such a beautiful exploration of how to connote and control thought in a video game, that it must be applauded.
