15 BRUTALLY Hard Video Games (That Are Actually Fun)
11. XCOM 2
Many games let you build a crew. Some of them will let you customise them, level them up and even tell stories about who they are as people as well as soldiers. These games will let you bond with these heroes until they feel like a part of your family. Not all games would then let you watch these beloved characters die cheaply due to your dumb mistakes. This is what makes XCOM 2 so special.
XCOM 2 built on the framework of the previous title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and turned the challenge up to 11. Firaxis Games did this by generating random maps and adding timed objectives. When playing a tactics game, the impulse is to take your time and wait for the perfect moment. But when the map is unknown to you and the clock is ticking, you have to become offensive. This leads to fatal errors.
Loyal soldiers, some of which might have been with you from the very beginning, can get cut down in an instant by moving into an area too hastily. A perfectly formed planned can go up in smoke in a heartbeat by simply moving one square too far. It is this connection, and subsequent desire for revenge, that keeps you coming back for more.
