You had one job: Keep the series' style and character. Like an entry into an established movie canon that everyone just discards when it gets back on track, DMC 2 took one of the most responsive, lightning-fast combat systems ever put to game... and slowed it down. It also thought that if one of the biggest selling points of your original title was a character called Dante - who was full of one-liners, animated exchanges and cocksure swagger - you should introduce an alternate person to play as, whilst making sure the hero himself retains nothing about what made him so memorable in the first place. The franchise would re-engage the ridiculous with part three in the first few opening cutscenes, but for DMC 2 we journeyed to a series of bland, black n' grey cityscapes, along with huge expansive arenas that still had the same small enemies wandering around for the most part. Capcom did introduce a badass wall-run move that let you flip off vertical surfaces to blast demons from above, but it wasn't enough to save a game whose entire feel just came across as what the original game might look like if all the fun and personality had been sucked out of it. Are there any other titles we've missed that totally deflated you? Let us know in the comments!
