12. Water
Water is one of the most unusual Half-Life 2 mods out there. It forgoes the standard Half-Life first-person viewpoint, moving to a third-person perspective instead. More importantly though, you play as a mermaid.
The gameplay favours exploration, puzzle-solving and adventure with much of the action taking place in the water but you are able to crawl overland and even control land-dwelling fish people.
The mod's art style is particularly noteworthy, the fantastical world is just beautiful with muted colours, classical architecture and cutscenes with an air of historical theatre. The visuals are also a reminder of just how stunning the water effects are in the Source engine.
