15 Greatest Ever Video Game Anti-Heroes
3. Garrett - Thief
The Robin Hood of video games would be an accurate analogy for this entry. In the 2014 reboot of the franchise, Garret to steal something from the ruler of the City. Garrett witnesses a ritual being performed in the manor, and after a confrontation between Garrett and his partner, Erin, the two are captured.
Garrett awakens a year later to a plague named the 'Gloom' infesting the city, and decides to aid in the attempt to cure it, as well as removing the evil Baron Northcrest from power. Noble right?
At face value, however, Garrett is a skilled thief-for-hire, stealing valuable and treasured property that doesn't belong to him for monetary gain. No matter the reasoning, this is still illegal, even in the fictional City the game inhabits.
Garrett is also shown to have a strong moral compass. When Erin kills a guard that she could have easily avoided or incapacitated, he criticises her for doing so, saying that the man did not need to die.
This is a touch ironic, though. Later in the story you find out that the original ritual was for the baron to gain power, but because it was interrupted halfway through, the Gloom was released on the city.
Maybe if Garrett wasn't a thief for hire, they would just have a powerful baron to contend with, instead of a still-powerful baron and a plague of death.
