Of all the scares in the series to come, this one still tops it. Why?
Because it's so early in the game, where we're still finding our feet and deducing what's happening, that these four legged frightmares pull this off.
Even by the time the remake rolled around, they pulled a switch on us. They knew we were expecting it... so it didn't happen. Lulled by a false sense of security, it happens on the way back through instead.
Touché Capcom. Still got it after all those years.
Sure, dogs are relatively weak enemies in the grand scheme of things, but that's not the point. Resident Evil was a hit for a reason, because it was so fresh in the days of survival horror. That to this day that it gets remembered and immortalised (like this, funnily enough) is a testament to the strength of one single moment.
Whatever your opinion on its many rises and falls, declines and second winds, the phrase "dog window" will always command the same level of respect and fear it deserves.
