15 Greatest Video Game Theme Songs Of All Time
2. Metal Gear Solid
When it comes to games that forever changed the industry and ushered in new mechanics or ways we think about gaming as a medium, Hideo Kojima's handling of Metal Gear Solid as the first truly cinematic video game really shook up the foundations in every possible way.
No more were characters mere controllable husks with no relatable personalities, and when they were, no longer were endless reams of text necessary to convey that. Solid Snake was gaming's own Hollywood hero, voiced accordingly by David Hayter, and everybody wanted to be him. The stealth-heavy and espionage-filled tale of super-spies, political intrigue, social commentary and supernatural bosses combined to kickstart a franchise that would run for almost another two decades.
In pursuit of all things western, Kojima would replace original composer Kazuki Muraoka with Harry Gregson-Williams after the first game, and although the future scores for the sequels are brilliant, it's this original, industrially-tinged and just plain cool theme that will always be the best.
