And there we all were, silly little gamers, thinking that our romp through the city of Rapture was driven by ourselves, or at least by the protagonist Jack's own motivations. But it was all a lie, and this is the moment where the illusion gets shattered in the most spectacular possible way. Andrew Ryan's speech about choice, and the distinction between Man and Slave, is not only one of the biggest twists in video game history, but an ingenious fourth-wall moment where you question your own sense of control over your interactions with the gaming medium.

You can argue that as gamers we're often little more than pawns and catalysts for game narratives that we're never really in control of, and BioShock makes us aware of this fact with the impact of a golf club crashing down on our skulls.
