14. Team Fortress 2
Okay, well, maybe not actually Team Fortress 2, but I am using it as an illustration. And I don't think any game released this generation that helps illuminate the power of online distribution, more specifically Steam, quite like TF2 did. Steam was released in 2003 but actually only really started to gain traction when Valve began making partnership and hosting third party games on the service around 2005. Since then, digital distribution has exploded. Quite possibly one of the most important developments this generation that will have far reaching consequences in the future. Team Fortress 2 remains an unflappably popular game because of its free to play nature on Steam. Also inroducing early forms of unintrusive but substantial microtransactions pointed in a direction the whole industry was headed in.
