11. Grand Theft Auto 4
As much as people complained about GTA4, it was a game a huge proportion of the gamers played. While the legacy of the game is solid but not phenomenal, you would be hard pressed to find someone who hadn't at least tried Rockstar's game. Of course, whereever the GTA series goes, controvesy is not far to follow. While there were certainly some vocal opponents to the game on its release, all in all, this generation actually saw a quieting of government outcry over 'violent videogame'. That was at least until the Sandy Hook shooting in December. Now it is as hot a topic as it ever was, with real government intervention being planned in America. When we do end up looking back over whatever changes this intervention might bring, GTA4 will inevitably be brought into the conversation, despite being out for years previously, just for the sheer reason of being GTA4. Applauded but also panned, most of the time in the same breath, Grand Theft Auto 4 was always going to be a major player this generation, and while it certainly wasn't the game changer it could have been, there is little reason not to include it on the list. In fact, I think it defines this generation perfectly. The game is slow, experimental, grubby, inspiring, depressing, gorgeous, boring and inovotive. Wait, I forget. Am I talking about Grand theft auto 4 or the current generation of consoles?
