2. Grand Theft Auto V
It's one hell of an achievement, the ol' Grand Theft Auto V (even now it feels crazy the original version came out two years ago), but amongst all the questionable elements such as Trevor's motivations, the social commentary a game like this provides all of us and the fact the world itself is positively jaw-dropping - it's still just more GTA.
"What does that mean? Vice City and San Andreas were 'more GTA'"
Well, yes and no. Vice City introduced worthwhile things to the core gameplay like leaping out of moving cars, blasting tires and popping dudes through windshields. It revamped the soundtrack and positively owned a particular time period - likewise with San Andreas. Rockstar's 90's gangster opus also introduced a bevy of RPG-like elements that helped invest you in the world, telling a rags-to-riches story that was equal parts fun and escapist as it was contextually believable and engaging.
For GTA V it's clear the team are twiddling their thumbs. Instead of grand innovations seen in things like the end of Red Dead Redemption or the style of Max Payne 3, we got torture and yoga mini-games, missions where you drive from cutscene to cutscene, 'skit'-type setups like the Life Invader assassination, and a trio of characters so vile there's a chance they'll be fronting the next Manhunt.
GTA V was a well-playing experience, but outside of proving they can build another world on a huge scale just 'cause, there's sadly nothing else to write home about.
