15 Most Overrated Video Games Of The Generation (So Far)
8. NieR: Automata
When Nier: Automata released in early 2017, it was treated as the second coming of video games. Praised for its deep and philosophical approach to game design, the sequel was singled out for daring to push the envelope of the medium.
While some of the acclaim was warranted however, Automata didn't exactly do anything that other titles haven't attempted before. Hell, a lot of the 'innovative' ideas the game had were ripped directly from the original Nier.
Admittedly they weren't quite as polished or as well presented there as they were in this sequel, but the core concepts reviewers praised as being unique were still years old. Plus, outside of these cool ideas the rest of the game was a pretty mundane affair, featuring uninspired quest design and a bland world that got real old, real fast.
It was still good in and of itself, but the incoherence of the story and the repetitiveness of the design meant that Automata wasn't quite the flawless masterpiece many wanted it to be.
