In the late 2000s, horror games had lost their way slightly many of them seemed to want to focus more on action than on horror, like the Resident Evil series. Then, in 2010, a little game called Amnesia came along and showed the big boys how to do horror properly. This game is legitimately terrifying. Exploring the haunting halls of an ancient castle with only a lantern for light makes every object and every shadow look eerie and menacing in that way that only a flickering candle can. However, the scariest thing about this game is the monsters. You cant look at them for more than a brief second before your characters sanity starts to wobble, and he is quickly consumed by madness should you not scarper sharpish. The same thing also happens if your lantern runs out so every moment is a tense compromise between needing to descend further, not wanting to run into an enemy and not wanting to run out of oil. Naturally, theres no way to defend yourself apart from running away and like others on this list, hiding from an abomination which is shuffling around right next to you is heart-stoppingly tense. If you need any more proof of how scary this game is well just check YouTube. Millions of people can't be wrong, right?
