15 Video Games You Wrongly Assume Are Terrible
3. Silent Hill: Downpour
The Game: The final core entry into the Silent Hill series to date, following yet another poor sap trapped in the nightmarish titular town as he attempts to make his escape.
Why You Assume It's Terrible: Even reliable fans of the franchise didn't show much interest in this one, and the reviews were extremely mixed with many expressing a distaste for the emphasis on combat and wide-open exploration.
Developer Vatra Games folded mere month after Downpour came out, which pretty much tells you how well it did (or rather, didn't) sell. Of the core SH games, it's generally accepted to be the worst.
Why You're Wrong: Silent Hill: Downpour is admittedly a far cry from the heights of the series, but to completely dismiss it based on that notion is totally absurd. The combat is certainly no less clumsy than it was in the earlier games, and the emphasis still remains on atmosphere and suspense above all else.
Plus, the Otherworld sections of the game are arguably some of the most surreal, visually striking and intense sequences in the entire series. It's plenty flawed, sure, but it dares to try something a little different, and hell, the story's better than Homecoming's, so that's something.
