Switching gears from racing to horror whilst keeping the thrills plentiful, Red Barrels' foray into first-person horror is one of the finest in the entire genre, mainly down to an exquisitely affecting atmosphere that bolts you to the edge of your chair for the duration. That's mainly down to some very dank, moody lighting that forces you to rely on a night vision-equipped camera, the whipping up of it is the only way you're going to see what's lying in any particular corner or dark patch. As with all the best horror experiences it's the developers pulling the puppet-strings at just the right times that gets the strongest results, and when you throw in a really cool story that only gets better with some optional DLC (a terrifying prospect in itself) Outlast remains one of the best first-person survival horrors to be worth a recommendation after the genre has somewhat died down.
