16 Essential Video Games Worth Buying An Xbox One For

1. Halo 5: Guardians

For whatever reason - but mainly because when Bungie left to work on Destiny, they took Halo's fanbase with them - Halo's formerly world-stopping reputation has dropped off in recent years, despite 343 Industries advancing the series' core mechanics in some truly innovative ways.

Mid-air boost dashes, descending ground-pounds, evasive slides and stupidly satisfying shoulder-charges, the minute to minute gameplay of Halo 5 feels fresh and progressive, whilst keeping its spirit alive at every turn.

Sales and critical reception suffered from Guardians essentially being sold on a lie; being the game is barely about the clash of Master Chief and 'rival' Spartan Locke, more the hunt for the missing Cortana. However, it's the gameplay that remains absolutely outstanding, thanks to a bevy of new weapons, brilliant level design and a liquid butter 60fps frame rate.

Halo might not be the cultural touchstone that "everyone is playing" like it was across the 2000s, but that's not a reflection of Guardians' true quality. With the best gameplay the series has seen yet, a bevy of free DLC add-ons and a developer determined to build a solid reputation with fans, Halo 5 is phenomenal achievement, and one that deserves way more attention from top to bottom.
