16 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About Nintendo
7. Nintendo Helped Create The PlayStation
Back in the late 80s, Nintendo and Sega were doing battle for living room supremacy, however one Ken Kutaragi was a lowly programmer at Sony, developing a specific computer chip that would then entice Nintendo to create a joint console - one that could play both cartridges and the at-the-time revolutionary CDs. The deal and form-factor went through many iterations, but eventually it fell apart as both companies couldn't decide on how to split the revenue at retail (Nintendo wanted cartridge sales, Sony, CDs), all despite 200 prototypes being made and handed out to executives. This 'rivalry' spurred Kutaragi to create the PlayStation brand to see his hard work come to some fruition, and one of the prototypes was discovered as recently as June 2015, although no games were ever officially announced.
