13. The Indie Game Scene Was Boosted Greatly By 1997 PS1 Dev Kits

The quirky name for all sorts of random-feeling games you'd get on demo discs for the Official PlayStation mag back in the late 90s came straight from Sony themselves, as they'd send out debug versions of the PS1 as coding kits for people to try their hand at indie development.
The end result was a huge amount of soon-to-be prolific coders first cutting their teeth on Sony's software, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles developer Mitsuru Kamiyama being a particularly noteworthy name who first got used to the medium with the program.
