Dark Souls III may be the final entry in the series as far as FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki is concerned (I highly doubt Bandai Namco will let it fizzle out), but it's reassuring to see that other studios are continuing to keep several of its themes alive going forward.

Case in point: Nioh. Team Ninja's Eastern-themed action RPG has unashamedly drawn inspiration from Miyazaki's (current) greatest creation, including weighty combat and a risk/reward currency system that can be used to purchase items and level up your character.

Yes, you lose it all upon death.

Some may see it as too derivative, but Nioh offers plenty of its own unique content, enough to make it much more than a simple cut and paste.

Combat stances, faster combat and a vastly different narrative all lend to Nioh having been affectionately dubbed 'Samurai Souls' by fans.
