10 years in the making (FF XV originally started out as Versus XIII, an expansion... spin-off.... thing), it's been reworked and remade countless times over, eventually emerging in playable form thanks to an admittedly pretty brilliant playable demo in 2015. The art aesthetic matches large Monster Hunter-style beasts roaming around an open-world, with pockets of modern society setting up shop, meaning you've got gas stations and commercial havens for Chocobo merchandise mere meters away from hulking creatures and supernatural warriors taking them down for experience points. In a cool twist on the standard RPG formula, you actually 'bank' your experience at the close of each trip out into the wilderness, establishing a great sense of risk and reward as the world turns on a day-night cycle that also buffs creatures and other enemy units in the area. It looks absolutely stunning, has the most satisfying real-time combat in any FF so far, and fronts a killer fantasy-meets-real life aesthetic that's just a joy to explore. Final Fantasy XV could be something mighty special indeed.
