16 Worst Video Game Levels Of The Decade (So Far)
4. The Gutter - Dark Souls II
Remember how I said Blighttown was a bit naff? Well, for the sequel - which saw creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki step out to work on Bloodborne - we got The Gutter, a pitch-black assembly of ladders and boxed-in areas, purpose-built to annoy you.
I imagine it was first pitched as an area that would showcase DS2's all-new lighting engine, which was supposed to tie into the idea of lighting braziers across the game's runtime. However, when that mechanic was removed, the Gutter became as boring and glum as its namesake.
Underground areas in Souls games are always harder than anything else, but this was just a slog.
