7. Transistor

What It's About: Supergiant Games follow up their superb debut Bastion with another action RPG, utilising a similar art and gameplay style, but bringing unique combat to the table as well as a fresh cyberpunk aesthetic. Why You Need To Play It: Because of all the games released last year, few on either side of the spectrum (indie or AAA) were as brilliantly assured as Transistor. From the ethereal visuals and haunting musical score to the ridiculously addictive fighting mechanics, the game is thoroughly reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII, and probably about as close as you're going to get to a spiritual successor. Sure, it's not a particularly long game, but it sticks well to the maxim that brevity is the soul of wit, because every second of this sumptuous, tragic RPG is an absolute pleasure. Whatever Supergiant cook up next has a whole lot to live up to...
