2. Shovel Knight: Specter Of Torment
Despite releasing back in 2014, the immaculate Shovel Knight has become something of a gaming sensation. Appearing everywhere from Yooka-Laylee to physical form as a Nintendo Amiibo, the best thing Yacht Club did was expand the game into a "platform" to house various other Knights formerly fought in the campaign, as they receive their own stories.
2017's latest addition is Specter Knight, the formerly scythe-flinging boss turned sympathetic hero once you start delving into how he lost his soul in the first place. This narrative backing is the perfect accompaniment to wall-running, mid-air dashes, various new powers and a ton more levels, as unlike Plague Knight's expansion that reused the entirety of Shovel Knight's environments, Specter's tale is all the more unique.
I'll maintain that Shovel Knight and his companions deserve to be up there with the Marios and Sonics of the world, and Specter Knight proves Yacht Club are some of the hardest working developers in the industry today.
Oh, and if you own Shovel Knight from three years ago, all the additional content - both now and going forward - will always be free. That is how you expand a game alongside your community of followers and do it right.
