4. Returning To Anor Londo - Dark Souls 3
I've rabbited on about how Dark Souls 3 is a love letter to the fans of Hidetaka Miyazaki's brutal franchise, but nothing brings that home quite like revisiting one of the most storied locations of the first Dark Souls - Anor Londo.
Birthplace of one of the most gruelling boss fights of all time (responsible on my part for breaking a controller by hurling it off a nearby wall), its a huge monument to the former human populace taking up residence in the land. Towering regal structures arc skywards as they always did, but now you're approaching it like a soldier returning home after some time overseas.
You notice the previously reliable blacksmith has been slain while you were away, and you'll pick up on how some rooms and routes have caved in, all before realising the main run to the boss area has stayed the same.
Best/worst of all, you actually have to fight another arduous boss in the exact same room as Ornstein & Smough, the duo I was alluding to earlier, allowing FromSoftware to play with your intertextual connection to the original with a deliciously evil intent.
