1. The Blood Trails - Max Payne

Making heavy use of "Bullet Time", which allowed the player to slow down the action and essentially pretend they were playing The Matrix, the game was one of the best shooters of the era. It also featured some damned weird nightmare sections where the player was assaulted with the sobs of Max's dead baby while various characters proceeded to mindf*** him into oblivion. All of this culminated in the ridiculous blood trail, which Max had to follow perfectly lest he fall into the inky blackness below. It was a true WTF moment in a game that had been fairly realistic up until that point, completely breaking the flow of the game in the process as many a player yearned to get away from this futile exercise in frustration so they could go back to pumping goons full of lead.
