Do you remember that friend you had in school who always remarked on finishing a game "First time through, on hard"?

They were total liars (probably) but the fact remains, when difficulty in 99% of games boils down to making your life go down faster whilst lobbing scores of enemies your way instead of something that alters the core game mechanics, the idea of opting into a bout of pure frustration is just maddening.
