19 Scariest Video Game Moments Of The Decade (So Far)

2. Trying To Stay Out Of The Water - Amnesia: The Dark Descent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dc-Hfpp0d4 The magic of Frictional Games' masterpiece lies in it's ability to manipulate you on a deep instinctual level - rather than simply spitting out hordes of monsters for you to gun down - and this results in gameplay that jabs at your emotional triggers with almost child-like cruelty. Amnesia's implementation of a 'sanity' meter ensures that the very idea of gazing upon the creatures inhabiting the castle inspires terror as you'll come to crave the comfort that light provides, while avoiding darkness like the plague. The kicker here though, is the fact that oftentimes your only real option for losing the monsters chasing you was to camp out in the dark, thus impacting your sanity which drained the longer you stayed there. And the only thing more terrifying than being chased by a vicious beast is being chased by a vicious beast that's invisible to the naked eye. This particular encounter occurs when you're forced to travel through a series of flooded tunnels which are host to the aforementioned invisible creatures, and as the only way to track their movements is through watching and listening for ripples in the water, it becomes particularly difficult to maneuver around them without giving away your own position. You've got to really tamp down on your nerves to survive this one.
