20 Announced Video Games You Won't Play For YEARS

Don't expect to play these huge games for a LONG time.

It's no secret that making even the smallest, most modest game takes a long time, and when we're talking about AAA blockbuster behemoths with hundreds and hundreds of people in the credits, it's becoming increasingly common for development to last an entire decade.

Much has been written about the ballooning time cost of games development in recent years, where if a hit franchise manages to put out a new game within three or four years, that's basically impressive.

Yet at present it's getting to the point where many beloved AAA studios might end up releasing just one or two games per generation.

And it's a trend that sadly shows little sign of slowing down, given the many, many hugely anticipated video games that were announced years and years ago, and yet which we're still one hell of a long time away from playing.

Most of these 20 video avidly awaited video games were announced years ago, but everything we've seen and heard suggests they're still a good while away from release, whether as "soon" as 2028 or well into the 2030s.

Hell, it's not an absurd assumption that some of these games could end up launching on the PlayStation 7...

20. Cyberpunk 2

Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt RED

CD Projekt Red's hugely anticipated follow-up to their mega-hit FPS Cyberpunk 2077 was initially introduced as "Project Orion" in 2022, though it wasn't until May 2025 that the game entered pre-production and was officially referred to as Cyberpunk 2.

Last May, CD Projekt Red co-CEO MichaƂ Nowakowski responded to claims that the game might not release until 2030 or 2031, and while Nowakowski chose his words carefully, he confirmed a production cycle of four-to-five years, before adding that an early 2030s release seemed realistic.

At the very end of 2025, Polish analytics firm Noble Securities did their own research and estimated that players wouldn't get hands-on with Cyberpunk 2 until Q4 2030.

Considering the numerous other high-profile projects the studio has in the oven right now - one of which we'll get to later - as well as the expected scope and production quality of Cyberpunk 2, this certainly seems like a plausible timeframe.
