20 Awful Characters In Amazing Games
5. H’aanit (Octopath Traveler)
Creating a strong protagonist is a difficult job, and the nature of Octopath Traveler, a game with eight of them, makes it even harder. That's eight chances to get it right (sixteen if you include the sequel), but eight chances to get it wrong, too. Naturally, they aren't all winners, and while the likes of Olberic, Primrose, or Osvald present a good case for being worst of the bunch, H'aanit takes the cake.
While the concept behind this character is great, a master hunter with control over monsters and beasts, she falls flat when compared to her promise. The first and most notable problem is her style of speech. H'aanit talks in a blend of "Ye Olde" and modern language that sounds cobbled together and unnatural. It's a decent idea of paper, but feels forced and grating in execution.
On top of this, her story is one of the weakest in the game. Her goal of finding her missing mentor is simple and one-note, especially compared to the complicated, nuanced stories of her fellow travelers. Overall, she comes across as a character with so much to offer but so little to give.
