Whilst most of the Harvest Moon games are worth your time (if for some reason Stardew Valley disappears from existence), Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town is one of the best in the series. Whilst not the first portable entry, it's the first one to stand toe-to-toe with its home console counterparts, in fact, the game might just be better.

There's a reason that this game got a remake with Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, it's arguably the most beloved entry in the series.

You play as an unnamed boy who becomes friends with a kindly old man who gives you his farm in his will. You don't find out about this until half a year after the man died though so the farm isn't in great shape when you start. When was someone gonna tell you that you now own a farm? The mayor only tells you because you leave home to come visit.

If you want to play as a girl then there's the just as good Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town. You think Pokémon is bad with its version differences, Harvest Moon makes you buy a completely separate game if you want to play as a different gender.
