Marking one of the VERY few times Nintendo have trusted anyone else with their characters, Mario & Rabbids was actually developed by Ubisoft, who - continuing a year where they went from strength to strength - turned in one of the best games of their career.

Put simply, Mario & Rabbids is a supremely polished and effortlessly playable game. Ubi walk a solid line between making everything accessible to strategy newcomers, whilst slowly layering on additional layers of strategy and game mechanics overtop.

Bounce damage and other status effects work in tandem with abilities that grant bonus shots to afflicted enemies, letting you play with a mix of on-the-fly improvisation and long-term thought.

Yes, this is still a turn-based, flank-heavy strategy game, but chain attacks also upend everything. Now you can combo a knee slide or head-jump to deal more damage or create distance respectively, challenging you to see just how many things you can do per turn, rather than spreading a plan out across multiple characters.

Though 2017's Mario conversations are going to be dominated by Odyssey, his work with the Rabbids is just as worth championing.
