Bend Studio's 2019 take on the zombie/viral outbreak survival genre surprised many when it came out, including yours truly. At first, I'd dismissed it as another Left 4 Dead knockoff, an endless shooter as mindless as the hordes that populate it.

But when you get into it, it's a deeper story about loss, redemption and the human instinct to survive at all costs. Oh, and you get to build a sweet motorbike too.

Deacon St. John, despite having a name like a branch of geriatric first aiders, is not a likeable character at the start. But as you ride along with him (literally), you start to grow compassionate towards him on his tour of the infected midwest American towns and settlements he aides.

Both gunplay and melee combat are handled well, as thwacking enemies with spiked bats has some real weight to it. As do the hordes of infected, that can overwhelm you if you get too cocky.

A strong new IP from the same studio that once brought you the Syphon Filter series, it's a strong take on both the open world and zombie genres.
