20 Best PlayStation Games Of The 2000s
10. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty (2001)
When Metal Gear Solid came out in 1998, it was the first time a video game could channel the same cinematic qualities found in movies. The brainchild of Japanese mastermind Hideo Kojima, the game took the world by storm and introduced Solid Snake as the ultimate stealth operative. Fans finally got a sequel in 2001 in form of Sons of Liberty.
Sons of Liberty was divided into two chapters; Tanker and Plant. The Tanker chapter lets you control Solid Snake as he snuck into a cargo ship, and the Plant chapter lets you control Raiden as he sneaks into an oceanic weapons facility. The game further explored stealth, as you could hold up guards armed with only a tranquilizer gun, or hide in lockers and beneath tables to evade enemies. You could also go all out in a fighting frenzy with a newly-introduced first person view for more precise shooting.
Then there are the stellar boss battles, which varied from fighting against the acrobatic, knife-fighting Vamp to withstanding the brutal final onslaught of dozens of Metal Gear RAY mechs. It was an instant classic, and succeeded in laying down the foundation for future MGS instalments.
