20 Best Video Game Stories Ever
7. Nier: Automata
Yoko Taro is one of those auteur creators that, for the longest time, the only people who knew about him were the kind of super-hipsters who make 3 hour long YouTube videos about inane topic that you can't stop watching for some reason. But the man finally got his due when he made the critical darling, Nier: Automata.
Nier Automata takes place so far into the future from the previous games that you don't need to know jack all about them (and considering how many people played Yoko Taro's other games, that's definitely a good thing) and centers on a pair of androids, 2B and 9S, who are tasked with exploring the ruins of planet Earth by their android masters. Little do they know that this mission will take them on an existential nightmare of a journey through the meaning of existence and humanity as they are confronted at every turn by dark mirrors of everything they are.
Nier: Automata loves one and only one thing and that is taking the audience for a damn ride. And that refers both to the fun as hell gameplay by acclaimed studio Platinum games and the story that twists and turns in every way you expect and at least 12 ways you don't.
