20 Best Video Game Storylines Of The Decade (So Far)
13. Gone Home
On the surface, the story of Gone Home doesn't seem to be anything special. Ostensibly, it's the tale of an ordinary family: the game chronicles the life of a teenager as she slowly comes to learn about her sexuality and her place in the world, while her parents' marriage slowly unravels at the same time.
However, it's the way the game completely shatters your expectations that makes it one of the most memorable experiences of the decade so far. Opening with your character coming home to find the place deserted and their family missing, a series of diary entries detailing a cult-like ritual suggests that Gone Home is going to be yet another walking horror simulator.
But it's only at the very end that you realise there was never anything supernatural afoot; only one family's trauma as they came to terms with everyday problems that are just as scary - if not more terrifying - to face than ghosts and goblins.
