Firing out the gates with some ex-Infinity Ward members, new developer Respawn Entertainment decided to shake up the FPS shooter by throwing a few whopping great mechs into the fold to great effect. Many traditionalists of the genre didn't jump ship across to Team Titan, thereby impacting its overall reputation in the face of titles like COD or Destiny, although you only need take one look at this year's Call of Duty to see how much they recognised the threat of mech-boosted warfare. For those that did suit up though, they found a brilliantly fun, meaty shooter whose core gameplay mechanic was routed in a pendulum swing between on-foot sprinting across any surface, alongside summoning the titular mechs to dole out some liquid hot death from within instead. Call of Duty's Advanced Warfare pulled more headlines just out of brand recognition alone, but this supremely polished sci-fi shooter took just enough influence from the industry leader that everyone can identify with to shake up the core foundations in just the right way.
